    KJF FESTIVAL PROFILE

    Kgalagadi Jazz Festival (KJF) is a premier Jazz brand, established by Merakeng Foundation. The festival is staged annually in Kuruman, Northern Cape Province of South Africa. KJF is an instalment of a great jazz musical experience.

    Kgalagadi Jazz Festival attracted 8000 revellers in the year 2016, one third of which reside in the Northern Cape, followed by Gauteng, North West province and other areas around the country. The festival also attracted some Jazz lovers from neighbouring Botswana and Namibia.

    KJF is a jazz festival with a very strong development wing focusing primarily in the arts and culture sector. In the week preceding the main festival, numerous workshops are held to develop art and culture.

    Merakeng Foundation enlists the services of accomplished Jazz musicians such as Selaelo Selota to facilitate our Jazz Workshops. The latter focused on development of young, local jazz enthusiasts.





    The Arts and Crafts workshop was facilitated by a crafts development institute. This workshop focuses on product quality and the development of business skills amongst artists and crafters.

    Kgalagadi Jazz Festival (KJF) is a premier Jazz brand, established by Merakeng Foundation under the directorship of Mr. Willie Reetsang, who has decades of experience in the music industry and has staged other successful jazz festival like the Mahikeng Jazz Festival (4 years).

    In 2016 (its inaugural year), Kgalagadi Jazz Festival attracted an estimated 8000 patrons ; one third of which reside in the Northern Cape, followed by Gauteng, North West province and other areas around the country. The festival also attracted Jazz lovers from neighbouring Botswana and Namibia. KJF 2016 featured jazz greats like Selaelo Selota, Letta Mbuli, Zahara, Nathi, Stimela, McCoy Mrubata and many more.

    As an organisation we invested R3.6m in the 2016 show. We have media partners like Motsweding FM who provide access to over 3 million listeners across the country.

    We also drive awareness and promote the festival with a carefully structured mix of traditional and digital marketing strategy to reach our audience nationally and in the Kuruman surroundings.

    KJF ARTS DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES

    KJF is a jazz festival with a very strong development wing focusing primarily in the arts and culture sector. In the week preceding the main festival, numerous workshops are held to develop local arts and culture. Here young and raw talent is work-shopped by experienced professionals in the industry. The outcomes of the music workshop is a local jazz ensemble that gets to perform as curtain raisers at the main festival and continues to work with the facilitator throughout the year.

    Merakeng Foundation enlists the services of accomplished Jazz musicians such as Selaelo Selota (2016) to facilitate our music. The Arts and Crafts workshop was facilitated by a Crafts Development Institute. This workshop focuses on product quality and the development of business skills amongst artists and crafters.
